How Freshworks Built Its Marketing Engine: From Chennai to a Nasdaq Listing
Freshworks marketed itself to small and midsize teams with comparison pages, webinars with outside experts, in-person events, a stunt at a rival's conference and a mix of self-serve and sales-assisted selling, according to third-party write-ups. Almost none of that channel detail is confirmed by a filing: the SEC documents in this research gave us cover-page facts, not spending or channel data. So this page does something the top results do not, which is to grade every reported channel by how well it is sourced, and to say plainly what is still unverified.
The short answer: what do we actually know about Freshworks' marketing strategy?
We know the shape of it, and we can show how well each piece is sourced. Freshworks sells simple, fast-to-start service software against heavier suites, and the marketing channels reported for it are comparison content, expert webinars, events, a rival-targeting stunt and a blog.
- Freshworks started in Chennai in 2010 as Freshdesk, took the Freshworks name in 2017 and listed on Nasdaq in 2021, per Umbrex.
- The positioning, per Umbrex, is software that is easier to buy, implement and administer than older enterprise suites.
- Every reported channel except the company's own editorial site rests on one secondary source, and none is confirmed by a filing.
- Free plans appear in the brief for this page, but the research has no sourced evidence on them, so this page makes no claim about them.
- The 10-K and S-1 are the places to verify spend and customer figures; this page tells you what they did and did not give us.
Who is Freshworks, and where did it start?
Freshworks is a cloud software company, founded in 2010 in Chennai, India, as Freshdesk, that sells customer support, IT service, employee service, sales and marketing applications.
Umbrex reports that the company took the Freshworks name in 2017, listed on Nasdaq in 2021 and acquired Device42 in 2024. It is now headquartered in San Mateo, California, with a substantial product and engineering presence in India and go-to-market led from North America.
Freshworks' own investor relations page, as read on October 16, 2026, says nearly 75,000 companies use its software to improve service efficiency and customer loyalty. Umbrex puts fiscal 2024 revenue at roughly $720 million, though the same profile's summary table shows that field as unavailable, so treat the figure as approximate and confirm it in the filings.
The product line matters for the marketing story because each product has its own audience. Umbrex lists Freshdesk, Freshservice, Freshsales, Freshmarketer, Freshchat, Freshcaller, Device42 and Freddy AI, and says the company reports a single segment.
How was the channel ledger on this page built?
The ledger below was built from the Freshworks sources in this research package, read on October 16, 2026: Umbrex's company profile, findyouraudience.online's marketing article, Freshworks' investor relations page, one article from Freshworks' editorial site, and the cover pages of two SEC annual reports.
Each reported channel gets one row, a named source, a date where the source gives one, and one of four evidence grades. The grades are our own and are applied on a fixed rule, not on how plausible a claim sounds.
- Primary. The claim appears in a filing or on Freshworks' investor relations pages.
- Company-published. Freshworks published it itself, so the page is real but the claim is the company's own.
- Secondary profile. A third party states it and says it draws on filings or investor material.
- Secondary, unverified. A third party states it, credits another secondary source, and gives no method or named data we can check.
No claim in the ledger was tested by Kanso, and the research package holds no first-hand data from us. That is why most rows land in the lowest grade.
Which marketing channels has Freshworks reportedly used, and how well is each sourced?
The sources report or imply seven channels or motions and say nothing on an eighth, free plans, and only one of the seven is a page Freshworks itself published. The table sets out what each source says, who said it and how far it can be checked.
| Channel | What the source reports | Source and date | Evidence grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comparison pages | Freshworks built comparison pages for its products so buyers could weigh it against rivals | findyouraudience.online, citing Content Zeal | Secondary, unverified: its side-by-side table names rivals only as Competitor A and Competitor B |
| Webinars with outside experts | More than 30 webinars, with speakers including Rand Fishkin and Patrick Campbell, tied to Freshsales | findyouraudience.online, citing Content Zeal | Secondary, unverified |
| Guerrilla stunt | A blimp at Salesforce's Dreamforce on September 25, 2018, in a campaign called Failsforce | findyouraudience.online, citing Content Zeal | Secondary, unverified: the date and name are specific, the outcome figures have no stated method |
| Events | An Experience Roadshow across 11 cities in 31 days, on customer support and sales | findyouraudience.online, citing Content Zeal | Secondary, unverified |
| Blog and organic search | Monthly organic visitors of 23.5K (Freshsales), 18.2K (Freshdesk) and 12.8K (Freshservice) | findyouraudience.online, undated | Secondary, unverified: no date and no traffic tool named |
| Company editorial site | Freshworks publishes The Works, including a September 24, 2025 piece on service as a growth strategy | freshworks.com, September 2025 | Company-published: the page is observable, its claims are marketing |
| Self-serve plus sales-assisted selling | Digital demand generation, inside sales, customer success, enterprise selling and partner enablement | Umbrex, drawing on fiscal 2024 filings | Secondary profile that cites filings |
| Free plans and trials | Nothing sourced in the research package | None | Not covered: no claim is made here |
findyouraudience.online attributes its Freshworks material to Content Zeal, whose article 6 Strategies Freshworks used to become a SaaS Unicorn appeared in the search results for this topic. The text of that article was not part of the research package, so this page does not read it and cannot check what it says.
What selling model sits behind the channels?
Freshworks sells through both digital self-serve and sales-assisted routes, according to Umbrex's reading of fiscal 2024 filings and investor material. That lets it serve small accounts cheaply while pursuing larger deals that need implementation help and wider buying committees.
Umbrex lists the go-to-market capabilities it sees as required: digital demand generation, inside sales, customer success, and increasingly enterprise selling and partner enablement. It also lists cross-selling existing customers across several products as a separate capability.
The same profile says Freshworks has historically been strongest with small and midsize businesses and the lower end of the enterprise market. It names the current strategy as growing Freshservice, deepening larger-account adoption, increasing multi-product use and embedding Freddy AI without losing the simplicity the brand was built on.
This is useful because it tells a reader what the channels are for. Our reading is that comparison pages and webinars feed a self-serve and inside-sales funnel, and are not channels you would expect to carry an enterprise deal alone.
What was the Freshworks Dreamforce blimp stunt?
On September 25, 2018, Freshworks used a blimp to promote its brand and criticise competitors at Salesforce's Dreamforce event, in a campaign findyouraudience.online calls Failsforce. That is the whole of what the sources let us say about the stunt itself.
The same article reports 100-plus media mentions, more than 1 million social impressions and a 30 percent increase in event attendance. It gives no method, no definition of which event attendance rose, and no named data source, so none of the three figures can be treated as measured.
What is observable is the choice of target: a rival's own conference, on a named day, with a named campaign. What is inferred is that the aim was borrowed attention from buyers already gathered to evaluate a competitor, and findyouraudience.online does not say whether it produced pipeline.
How did Freshworks use comparison pages?
findyouraudience.online says Freshworks built comparison pages for its products so prospects could weigh features, pricing and reviews against competitors, and credits Content Zeal for the point. This is the channel the strategy brief for this page cares most about, and it is also one of the thinnest in the evidence.
The article illustrates the idea with a table that lists Freshworks against Competitor A and Competitor B, with a monthly price, a user rating, support hours and free-trial availability. Because no rival is named, no reader can check a single cell against a real product page, so we do not repeat those figures.
What the evidence supports is narrower: comparison content is reported as part of the mix, and Umbrex lists Salesforce, ServiceNow, Zendesk, Atlassian and HubSpot among Freshworks' larger rivals. It does not tell us how many comparison pages exist, which rivals they cover, when they were published or what traffic they drive.
A founder who wants to copy the idea should audit the live pages themselves. Open each Freshworks comparison page, note which rival it names, which criteria it uses and whether it admits a case where the rival is the better pick, and date what you find.
What do the webinar and blog figures actually show?
The reported figures show scale of effort but not return: more than 30 webinars with speakers such as Rand Fishkin and Patrick Campbell, and three blogs with monthly organic visitor counts. findyouraudience.online credits the webinars with raising awareness of Freshsales, and gives no measurement behind that claim.
The blog figures are 23.5K monthly organic visitors for Freshsales, 18.2K for Freshdesk and 12.8K for Freshservice, with no date and no traffic tool named. We added them to see how the reported traffic is split, which is a calculation of ours and not a figure from the source.
23.5K + 18.2K + 12.8K = 54.5K combined
On those numbers Freshsales is 23.5 of 54.5, or 43.1 percent of the three blogs' reported organic visitors. Freshdesk is 18.2 of 54.5, or 33.4 percent, and Freshservice is 12.8 of 54.5, or 23.5 percent.
That split is worth a second look, because Umbrex names growing Freshservice as the first item in the current strategy, yet Freshservice has the smallest share of the reported traffic. This is an inference from undated secondary figures; it may reflect a different year, a different tool or a deliberate focus on paid or sales-led channels for that product.
Freshworks also runs its own editorial site, The Works. One article there, published September 24, 2025 by a director of product marketing with a product manager as co-author, argues that customer service is a growth strategy and walks through messaging channels, including Apple Messages for Business and Freshworks' AI Agent Studio.
That page is a clear, observable example of Freshworks publishing editorial content in its own name. What it cannot tell us is how much of the company's pipeline comes from such content.
What do the Freshworks IPO and the 10-Ks confirm?
They confirm that Freshworks is a public company whose Class A common stock trades as FRSH on The Nasdaq Stock Market LLC, and little else in the text we were able to extract. Both annual reports in the research, for the fiscal years ended December 31, 2022 and December 31, 2025, were captured only as far as their cover pages.
On the offering itself, Freshworks' S-1 sits on SEC EDGAR, and the company issued a press release titled Freshworks Announces Pricing of Initial Public Offering. Baird's deal page carries the title Freshworks Completes $1.1 Billion IPO, which is the only size figure in the research and is attributed here to that title alone.
Umbrex dates the listing to 2021. Price per share, shares sold and proceeds are for the pricing release and the S-1 to answer, and any selling and marketing spend is for the 10-Ks. None of that text was extracted for this page.
That is the gap against the brief. The brief asked for SEC filing data viewed through a channel lens; this page delivers the channel lens and an honest map of the filings, not the filing numbers.
If you want those numbers, the process is short. Work through these steps in the primary documents, and date whatever you record.
- Open the Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025 and the Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2022.
- Find the income statement and note the selling and marketing line for each year, if the company reports one.
- Find any customer-count or retention disclosures and the year each refers to.
- Read the S-1 for how the company described its go-to-market at the time of listing, and compare that wording with the later filings.
We have not performed these steps, and the list is a suggested method, not a result.
What is documented and what is analysis?
Documented facts are statements a named source makes that a reader can look up; analysis is our reading of them. The two lists below keep them apart.
- Documented: Freshworks was founded in Chennai in 2010 as Freshdesk, renamed in 2017, listed on Nasdaq in 2021 and acquired Device42 in 2024 (Umbrex).
- Documented: Class A common stock trades as FRSH on The Nasdaq Stock Market LLC (Form 10-K cover pages, fiscal years 2022 and 2025).
- Documented: nearly 75,000 companies use Freshworks, as read on Freshworks' investor relations page on October 16, 2026.
- Reported by a secondary source: the Dreamforce blimp on September 25, 2018, 30-plus webinars, an 11-city, 31-day roadshow, comparison pages and the three blog traffic figures (findyouraudience.online).
- Published by the company: a September 24, 2025 article on The Works about service as a growth strategy.
- Analysis: the reported Freshworks channels target buyers who are already comparing options or already at a rival's event.
- Analysis: the reported traffic split does not match the product priority Umbrex describes, though the figures are undated.
- Analysis: without spending data, this page cannot say what any channel cost or returned.
- Analysis: the grades in the ledger are Kanso's own rule-based judgements, not a standard.
What can a SaaS founder take from this?
Three habits transfer cleanly, and none depends on Freshworks' numbers being right. They are about how to learn from a rival's marketing.
- Treat a third-party claim about a rival's marketing as a lead. Look for the primary document, such as a filing or the company's own page, before you copy the tactic or quote the number.
- Name your rivals on a comparison page. The unnamed Competitor A table in the source cannot be checked by anyone, and a named, dated, criteria-led comparison can.
- Match content investment to the product you are pushing. If one line is your strategic priority, check that your content and search effort is not mostly going to another.
