How Much Does an SEO Agency Cost in India? Retainers, Deliverables and Red Flags
Indian agencies' published price pages put a small-business SEO retainer at about ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 a month and competitive national or e-commerce work from ₹40,000 up to ₹1,50,000 or more, before GST. This page sets four dated sources side by side, shows where they overlap and where they disagree, and lists the red flags they name. Every source is a seller or a seller's guide, so read the ranges as asking prices, not as a market survey.
How much does an SEO agency cost in India?
Digital Romans, an Indian agency, says most small and mid-size businesses in India are quoted ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 a month, and Media Sathi, another, puts average spend at ₹8,000 to ₹1,50,000. The spread is wide because the work behind a number differs: Digital Romans notes that agencies quoting ₹12,000 and ₹90,000 a month can both be honest.
- The small-business figures from the three Indian sources overlap at ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 a month (our arithmetic, shown below).
- Media Sathi and Digital Romans draw tier boundaries in similar places, near ₹15,000 and ₹40,000 a month.
- Digital Romans reports 18% GST on top, so a ₹25,000 quote becomes ₹29,500 a month.
- Both name a price near or under ₹5,000 a month as the point where real work cannot be funded.
How was this price comparison put together?
It compares four pages retrieved on 27 October 2026: three Indian agency pages (Media Sathi, Digital Romans and RankON Technologies) and one US pricing guide from Boulder SEO Marketing, which is dated 24 November 2025 on the page. Of the ten results analysed for this query on 27 October 2026, seven were classified as agency product or pricing pages, so this page puts the dated rupee figures in one place and shows the arithmetic.
The criteria were fixed before comparing. A figure is used only when it comes with a scope (a business type, a tier, a provider type or a pricing model), it is quoted as the source gives it, and any figure we derive is shown with its inputs and operation.
The limits matter. All four publishers sell SEO, none of the three Indian pages states a sample size, none shows a publication date in the text retrieved, and Kanso ran no survey and collected no quotes of its own.
What do Indian sources say SEO costs per month?
Their headline ranges overlap but do not match, and one source disagrees with itself. The table lists each range with the scope the source attached to it.
| Source | What the figure covers | Stated range per month |
|---|---|---|
| RankON Technologies | Agency average, India | ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 |
| RankON Technologies | Freelancer, India | ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 |
| RankON Technologies | Average monthly cost of its own projects | $300 to $700, stated as ₹25,000 to ₹55,000 |
| Media Sathi | Spread of quotes an owner may collect | ₹5,000 to over ₹2,00,000 |
| Media Sathi | Average company | ₹8,000 to ₹1,50,000 |
| Media Sathi | Small business, local and on-page work | ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 |
| Digital Romans | Most Indian businesses | ₹10,000 to ₹1,00,000+ |
| Digital Romans | Most small and mid-size businesses | ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 |
| Digital Romans | Full range for serious work | ₹10,000 to ₹3,00,000+ |
Three figures describe small businesses or the typical agency: ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 (RankON Technologies, an agency average not tied to business size), ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 (Media Sathi, small businesses) and ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 (Digital Romans, a small local business). The highest lower bound is ₹10,000 and the lowest upper bound is ₹25,000, so the range all three accept is ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 a month.
RankON Technologies gives two figures that do not sit together. It says an Indian agency averages ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 a month, yet puts the average monthly cost of its own projects at $300 to $700, which it states as ₹25,000 to ₹55,000. The page does not explain the gap.
What do the SEO price tiers look like side by side?
Media Sathi and Digital Romans, the two sources that publish named tiers, put the boundaries in similar places, at about ₹15,000 and ₹40,000 a month. The table lines up their tiers by the kind of business each is written for.
| Kind of business | Media Sathi | Digital Romans | Where they overlap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry, one city | Starter: ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 | Starter: ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 | ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 |
| Growth, regional | Growth: ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 | Basic to Growth: ₹20,000 to ₹40,000 | ₹20,000 to ₹40,000 |
| Advanced, competitive or national | Advanced: ₹40,000 to ₹1,50,000+ | Standard to Advanced: ₹40,000 to ₹75,000 | ₹40,000 to ₹75,000 |
| Enterprise or e-commerce at scale | Included in Advanced, up to ₹1,50,000+ | Enterprise or E-commerce: ₹75,000 to ₹3,00,000+ | ₹75,000 to ₹1,50,000 |
Agreement between two sellers is not proof of a market rate. The sources do not say whether they drew on shared habits or on each other, so the overlap shows where two asking prices coincide, not where buyers actually pay.
What does each SEO price tier buy?
The entry tier buys a handful of keywords and the local basics, and each step up adds keywords, content, technical work and link acquisition. These are the deliverables the two sources attach to their tiers.
- Entry: Media Sathi lists basic keyword research, website optimization, Google My Business setup and simple local SEO. Digital Romans lists about 5 to 10 keywords, basic on-page work, Google Analytics and Search Console setup and a monthly report, and says not to expect heavy link building or content at this level.
- Growth: Media Sathi lists website optimization, blogs, backlinks and performance reporting. Digital Romans lists 15 to 30 keywords, more target pages, some technical fixes, light content and regular reporting.
- Advanced: Media Sathi lists a technical audit, high-authority links, page speed work and dedicated account management. Digital Romans lists 30 to 50+ keywords, stronger technical work, consistent publishing, active link acquisition and weekly or bi-weekly check-ins.
- Enterprise: Digital Romans lists dedicated strategists, large-scale content operations, structured data at scale and coordination with development teams.
RankON Technologies sells by counted activities instead. The table reproduces the counts for the three packages in the order its page lists them, and the first is headed Basic SEO Plan. The package prices were not in the text available for this page, so no rupee figure is attached to these counts.
| Deliverable | First package | Second package | Third package |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keywords targeted (maximum) | 10 | 20 | 40 |
| Local citations | 5 | 10 | 15 |
| Local classifieds | 2 | 5 | 10 |
| Onsite blog posts | 1 | 2 | 3 |
| Offsite blog posts | 2 | 4 | 6 |
| Blog optimization | Not listed | 5 posts | 5 posts |
| Social sharing (total) | 30 | 40 | 50 |
| Slide submissions | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| Podcast submissions | 1 | 2 | 3 |
| Q and A answers | 1 | 3 | 5 |
The page also says its standard pricing may rise with a client's requirements and that the number of approved links from monthly email outreach is not guaranteed. Counts like these make two quotes comparable on paper, but they say what is done, not what it is worth, so ask what outcome the activity is meant to produce.
Retainer, project, hourly, freelancer or in-house: what does each cost?
A monthly retainer is the most common model in India according to Media Sathi, and the alternatives are priced on different bases, so they cannot be compared fee to fee. The table collects each option with its source.
| Option | Stated price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Agency retainer | ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 a month on average (RankON); from ₹15,000 (Digital Romans) | RankON Technologies, Digital Romans |
| Boutique agency | ₹15,000 to ₹75,000 a month | Digital Romans |
| Larger agency with account management | ₹75,000 to ₹3,00,000+ a month | Digital Romans |
| Freelancer | ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 (RankON); ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 (Digital Romans), a month | RankON Technologies, Digital Romans |
| Hourly consulting | ₹800 to ₹3,000 an hour | Media Sathi |
| One-time SEO audit | ₹10,000 to ₹60,000 | Digital Romans |
| In-house hire | ₹4,00,000 to ₹12,00,000 a year in salary, plus tools and content budgets | Digital Romans |
Media Sathi says project pricing suits a defined job such as a technical audit or a site migration, and hourly consulting suits a company with an in-house team that needs occasional advice. Retainers suit a business that treats SEO as an ongoing channel.
The in-house line becomes comparable once it is a monthly figure. ₹4,00,000 divided by 12 is ₹33,333 and ₹12,00,000 divided by 12 is ₹1,00,000, so a salary alone costs ₹33,333 to ₹1,00,000 a month before tools and content, which is the range of the growth and advanced agency tiers. Digital Romans adds that doing SEO yourself costs little cash but about 10 to 15 hours a week.
What makes one SEO quote higher than another?
Scope moves a quote more than the agency's name does, and the sources name the same handful of drivers.
- Competition and industry. Media Sathi says finance, legal, healthcare and insurance raise the cost in India, and Boulder SEO Marketing, a US agency, makes the same point for legal, healthcare, finance and real estate.
- Keyword and page count. Digital Romans says most packages are built around keyword counts such as 10, 20, 30 and 50+, because each keyword usually needs its own page.
- Content volume. Digital Romans puts a properly produced article or service page at ₹2,000 to ₹12,000 each, so two pieces a month adds ₹4,000 to ₹24,000 and ten adds ₹20,000 to ₹1,20,000 (2 and 10 multiplied by each end of the range).
- Link building. Digital Romans calls it slow, manual work and one of the biggest cost drivers in competitive industries.
- Geography. Both Media Sathi and Digital Romans say targeting one city costs less than a wider area, and Digital Romans puts a locally focused Delhi NCR business from about ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 a month and NCR-wide or pan-India visibility from about ₹40,000.
- AI search work. Digital Romans says agencies add roughly ₹5,000 to ₹25,000 a month where entity, structured data and citation tracking are included. No other source in this set gives a figure, so treat it as a single-source claim.
- Site condition. Digital Romans says agencies often price the first two to three months higher to cover technical cleanup.
How much does GST add to an SEO quote?
Digital Romans, citing Busy, says SEO and other digital marketing packages attract 18% GST in India and that the September 2025 GST rationalisation left that rate unchanged. Confirm whether a quote includes it, because it changes what you pay.
| Quoted fee | GST at 18% | Monthly total | 12-month total |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹10,000 | ₹1,800 | ₹11,800 | ₹1,41,600 |
| ₹25,000 | ₹4,500 | ₹29,500 | ₹3,54,000 |
| ₹50,000 | ₹9,000 | ₹59,000 | ₹7,08,000 |
The rate comes from a secondary source, and Kanso did not read the GST notification itself. Whether a business can claim the tax back depends on its registration, so ask your accountant. This page gives no tax advice.
What are the red flags in an SEO quote?
The red flags the Indian sources agree on are a price too low to fund real work, a scope described as activities instead of outputs, and extra charges that appear after signing.
- A price below the floor. Media Sathi says a fee under about ₹5,000 a month cannot include genuine keyword research, quality content and proper link building, and Digital Romans says the same of ₹2,000 to ₹5,000. Media Sathi names copied or spun content, spam links and automated directory submission as the usual shortcuts, and Digital Romans names automated directory submissions and low-quality backlinks. Both give a Google penalty as the risk.
- Add-on fees. Media Sathi and Digital Romans both list one-time onboarding or setup fees, content writing billed separately inside a listed package, tool or backlink costs added each month, and charges for monthly reports.
- Vague scope. Digital Romans treats answers such as "SEO activities" to the question of what changes on your site each month as a warning sign.
- Link building left out without saying so. Digital Romans lists whether it is included or billed separately as one of the most commonly hidden costs.
Digital Romans says ₹8,000 a month cannot properly fund technical SEO, on-page work, content, link building and reporting together. Its own content price shows why: one article at ₹2,000 to ₹12,000 is 25% to 150% of an ₹8,000 fee (2,000 and 12,000 each divided by 8,000), before any technical work, outreach or reporting.
Both sources sell higher-priced plans, so a low quote is a reason to ask what is included, not proof of bad work. A quote at any price is a red flag when it cannot say what will change on your site each month.
What should you ask an SEO agency before you sign?
Ask for the monthly output in numbers and for every extra cost in writing. The first four questions below come from Digital Romans and Media Sathi, and the last two are our suggestions.
- What specifically changes on my website each month? (Digital Romans)
- How many pieces of content will you produce, and how long are they? Ask for word counts or topic lists, not just a number of articles. (Digital Romans)
- Is link building included, or billed separately, and how many outreach emails does the fee cover? (Digital Romans)
- Can I have a full breakdown that shows any setup fee, content, tool or report charge? (Media Sathi)
- Does the quote include GST, and what does the first year cost in total? (our suggestion, using the arithmetic above)
- Will I see the same data you see, in my own Search Console account? (our suggestion; the four Search Console reports a founder needs show what to look at)
Before you collect quotes, mark which of Digital Romans' five work areas you need: technical, on-page, content, link building and reporting. A package that bundles all five for a business that needs two is the likeliest place to overpay. A short self-run audit, such as the forty-check SEO audit checklist for small sites, tells you which areas those are.
How long does SEO take to pay back?
Digital Romans says most businesses see first ranking movement within three months and meaningful traffic and leads by six, and that competitive categories or sites with technical problems can take 9 to 12 months. Boulder SEO Marketing says results usually become significant in 3 to 6 months and lists 6 to 12 months or more as a typical retainer duration.
Digital Romans offers an illustration, which it labels as not a promise. The budget is ₹30,000 a month plus GST, so ₹35,400. By month six it assumes 20 organic enquiries a month, a 10% close rate (2 customers) and a ₹25,000 average sale, which is ₹50,000 a month, and it concludes that about 1.4 sales a month break even (35,400 divided by 25,000 is 1.42).
Our arithmetic shows what that framing leaves out. Six months at ₹35,400 is ₹2,12,400 spent, and ₹50,000 of revenue against ₹35,400 of cost leaves ₹14,600 a month. If the earlier months earned nothing, the most cautious reading, recovering ₹2,12,400 at ₹14,600 a month takes 212,400 divided by 14,600, or about 14.5 more months at a flat rate.
The inputs are the source's illustration, not data, and revenue before month six is our assumption. Use the method with your own close rate and sale value. Media Sathi's test is the same in plain terms: the investment should be smaller than the revenue SEO brings in.
Is SEO cheaper in India than in the US?
Media Sathi says SEO costs much less in India than elsewhere, but the published ranges overlap and the size of the gap depends on which benchmark you pick. The table lists the dollar figures as published.
| Source | Who it describes | Stated price |
|---|---|---|
| Media Sathi | US or UK companies | $750 to $2,000 or more a month, given as about ₹65,000 to ₹1,75,000 |
| Boulder SEO Marketing, 24 November 2025 | Reputable US-based agencies | $1,500 to $5,000 a month for most businesses; $2,000 to $4,000 for local service businesses |
| Boulder SEO Marketing, 24 November 2025 | Hourly and project work, US | $100 to $300 an hour; $5,000 to $30,000 a project |
| RankON Technologies | Its own projects | $300 to $700 a month, given as ₹25,000 to ₹55,000 |
The two benchmarks for the US and UK disagree, and Media Sathi's own ranges overlap: its Indian average reaches ₹1,50,000, while its US and UK range starts at about ₹65,000. Media Sathi's $750 to $2,000 or more sits below Boulder SEO Marketing's $1,500 to $5,000, which that agency describes as the market rate for reputable US-based agencies. Using RankON Technologies' own dollar figures, $300 is 20% of $1,500 and $700 is about 47% of it (300 and 700 divided by 1,500).
The rupee conversions are not consistent either. Media Sathi's $750 and $2,000 against ₹65,000 and ₹1,75,000 imply about ₹87 per dollar, while RankON Technologies' $300 against ₹25,000 and $700 against ₹55,000 imply about ₹83 and ₹79. No source gives its rate, so use the rupee figures as published.
What is documented and what is our analysis?
The documented points are statements the four sources make. The analysis is Kanso's reading of them.
- Documented: Digital Romans puts most small and mid-size Indian businesses at ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 a month, and Media Sathi puts average spend at ₹8,000 to ₹1,50,000.
- Documented: Media Sathi and Digital Romans publish named tiers with boundaries near ₹15,000 and ₹40,000, and list what each tier includes.
- Documented: Digital Romans, citing Busy, reports 18% GST on SEO packages.
- Documented: Media Sathi and Digital Romans both warn that fees near or below ₹5,000 a month cannot fund real work, and both list the same kinds of extra charges.
- Documented: RankON Technologies states an agency average of ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 and an average of ₹25,000 to ₹55,000 for its own projects.
- Analysis: ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 is the range three small-business figures share. It is an overlap of asking prices, not an observed market rate.
- Analysis: the overlap column in the tier table, the in-house monthly figure, the content and GST arithmetic and the payback extension are our calculations from the inputs shown.
- Analysis: counted deliverables and low quotes are signals to ask questions, not proof of poor work.
- Not covered: no source here has audited results, a sample of real contracts or Kanso's own clients, so none of this predicts what your quote will be or what SEO will return.
What part of an SEO retainer can software cover?
Software can cover the auditing, reporting and drafting parts of a retainer, and an agency or freelancer is still the better choice for outreach, link acquisition and work that needs a person accountable for the relationship. Digital Romans calls link building slow, manual work, and no tool described here does it.
Kanso's SEO Agent audits your site and Search Console data and turns what it finds into recommendations and tracked tasks for your approval. The Writer Agent turns Search Console opportunities into long-form article drafts in your brand voice, for you to review and publish yourself. Neither promises rankings or builds links, and plan details are on the pricing page, not here, because they change.
If you are weighing software against hiring help, the task-by-task map of what an AI CMO can and cannot do shows where a human still has to decide.
SEO agency cost in India: frequently asked questions
How much does SEO cost in India per month?
Indian price pages read on 27 October 2026 put SEO at about ₹10,000 to ₹1,00,000 or more a month, and Digital Romans says most small and mid-size businesses are quoted ₹15,000 to ₹50,000. Media Sathi gives an average of ₹8,000 to ₹1,50,000 and RankON Technologies gives an agency average of ₹8,000 to ₹25,000, so the figure depends on scope. GST, which Digital Romans reports at 18%, is added on top.
How much do SEO packages cost in India for a small business?
Small businesses are quoted ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 a month for local and on-page SEO by Media Sathi and ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 for a small local business by Digital Romans. The range both accept is ₹10,000 to ₹25,000, which is the higher of the two lower bounds and the lower of the two upper bounds. At the entry tier, Digital Romans says a package covers about 5 to 10 keywords, basic on-page work and a monthly report.
Is cheap SEO in India worth it?
Usually not below about ₹5,000 a month, according to Media Sathi, which says that price cannot cover genuine keyword research, quality content and proper link building. Digital Romans says the same of ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 and warns of automated directory submissions and a possible Google penalty. Both sell higher-priced plans, so ask what a cheap quote includes instead of rejecting it on price alone.
How much does SEO cost for a new website in India?
Neither Media Sathi nor Digital Romans gives a rupee figure for a new website, but Media Sathi says the cost is likely to be higher because of the setup effort. Digital Romans adds that agencies often price the first two to three months higher when a site needs technical cleanup. Ask for the setup work as a separate, itemized line.
How much does an SEO freelancer cost in India?
RankON Technologies puts an Indian SEO freelancer at ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 a month, or ₹60,000 to ₹1.2 lakh a year, and Digital Romans puts it at ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 a month. Digital Romans notes that one freelancer has limited bandwidth for technical work, content and outreach in the same month. Freelancers suit narrow, well-defined needs.
Is GST charged on SEO services in India?
Digital Romans, citing Busy, says SEO and other digital marketing packages attract 18% GST in India and that the September 2025 GST rationalisation did not change that rate. On that rate a ₹25,000 quote costs ₹29,500 a month (25,000 plus 4,500). Kanso did not read the GST notification itself, so confirm the rate and your input tax credit position with your accountant.
Is SEO worth the money?
SEO is worth the money only if the revenue it brings exceeds what it costs, which is the test Media Sathi gives for the right monthly spend. Digital Romans shows an illustration of ₹35,400 a month including GST breaking even at about 1.4 sales of ₹25,000, but it also says the first three months usually run at a loss. Treat any payback figure as an assumption to test, not a promise.
How do I choose the right SEO package for my business?
Match the package to the goal, as Media Sathi suggests: a starter package for local visibility only, a growth package for a brand that publishes regularly, and an advanced package for a competitive, high-value industry. Then ask each agency for the monthly output in numbers, such as pages changed, pieces of content and outreach emails, and for every extra cost in writing.
How much does SEO cost in India compared with the US?
Media Sathi says SEO costs much less in India, but the ranges overlap and the gap depends on the benchmark. Media Sathi gives $750 to $2,000 or more a month for US and UK companies, while Boulder SEO Marketing, a US agency, gave $1,500 to $5,000 in a guide dated 24 November 2025. RankON Technologies gives $300 to $700 a month for its own projects.
What does an SEO retainer usually include?
Digital Romans describes a retainer as several specialist jobs run in parallel: technical SEO, on-page SEO, content production, off-page link building, and reporting and strategy. Which of these a given fee actually funds depends on the tier, so ask how many hours, how many pieces of content and how many outreach emails the quote covers.
